What You'll See

Humpback Whales

Humpbacks feed through summer and fall in the waters around Hornby and Denman, gorging on herring and krill. We see breaching, tail slaps, and bubble-net feeding — sometimes just a few hundred metres from the boat.

Bigg's Killer Whales (Transient Orcas)

These are marine mammal hunters — silent, tactical, and thrilling to watch. Bigg's orcas patrol Baynes Sound and Lambert Channel year-round, stalking harbour seals and sea lions. Very different from the fish-eating residents most people think of.

California & Steller Sea Lions

The Fanny Bay winter spectacle is something else — hundreds of California and Steller sea lions pile onto the rocks and rafts during herring spawn in February and March. You can hear them bellowing before you see them. Norris Rocks is another major haul-out we visit by boat.

Harbour Seals

Year-round residents. You'll see them hauled out on rocks around Chrome Island, popping up alongside the boat in Lambert Channel, and keeping a curious eye on us from a safe distance.

Bald Eagles & Seabirds

Bald eagles — guaranteed on every trip. Great Blue Herons standing still as statues on the rocks. Pigeon Guillemots nesting in the cliffs. Harlequin Ducks in the tide rips. Brant geese passing through in spring. Pacific Loons in their breeding plumage. In winter, Trumpeter Swans settle into the wetlands behind Denman village.

Where We Go

These are the landmarks and wild places Captain Pat visits on sightseeing tours — all boat-access only, all spectacular.

Chrome Island Lighthouse

A stunning historic lighthouse perched on a tiny island off Denman's southern tip. Harbour seals haul out on the surrounding rocks. One of the most photographed spots on the coast — and we get you right up close by boat. Learn more →

Norris Rocks

A major Steller sea lion haul-out in the middle of the channel, accessible only by boat. Dozens — sometimes hundreds — of sea lions piled on the rocks, barking and jostling. You won't forget the sound or the smell. Learn more →

Sandy Island Marine Park

A beautiful sandspit at the northern tip of Denman Island. Sea urchins visible in the shallows, eagles overhead, and absolute quiet. One of BC's hidden gems — most people don't even know it's there. Learn more →

Flora Islet & Helliwell Bluffs

The dramatic sea cliffs off Hornby Island's east side. Flora Islet is known for six-gill shark diving in the deep water nearby. From the boat, the bluffs are stunning — layered sandstone, arbutus trees clinging to the edge, and eagles circling above.

Seasonal Highlights

There's something remarkable happening on the water in every season. Here's what to look for when you book.

Late Feb – March

The Herring Spawn

This is the big one. The water turns milky turquoise as billions of herring eggs coat the shoreline. Thousands of seabirds descend — gulls, eagles, scoters, grebes. Sea lions pile into Fanny Bay. Humpbacks and orcas follow the feast into Baynes Sound. It's the greatest wildlife spectacle on the BC coast, and we're right in the middle of it.

Spring

Migration & Return

Humpback whales start showing up again. Brant geese pass through in huge flocks. Harlequin Ducks move back into the tide rips. Pacific Loons in full breeding plumage. The days get longer and the water calms down — perfect touring conditions.

Summer

Peak Season

Humpbacks feeding actively. Bigg's orcas cruising the channels hunting seals. Pigeon Guillemots nesting in the rocky cliffs. Long warm evenings — some of our best tours are late-afternoon runs when the light turns golden on the water.

Fall & Winter

Quiet & Dramatic

Trumpeter Swans arrive in the wetlands. Sea lions begin gathering. The summer crowds are gone but the wildlife isn't — this is actually when the concentration of waterfowl peaks. Moody skies, flat calm mornings, and the boat practically to yourself.
